Zeruarekiko elkarbizitzan (2012) is a work from the project “Seeking the Light,” in which the artist explores architecture as a stage for the spectacle of life, everyday existence, and also creation and construction. Guided by the principles of inhabiting, thinking, and building, the artist finds in light a source of emotional and material inspiration, serving as both an existential and technical resource. The beam of light is represented as an objectified form, as movement, as a concept of great speed due to its physical nature, and as a creator of the vast array of existing colors. To achieve this, the artist creates various acrylic cubicles shaped like the interior architectural forms of her home at the time. These acrylic boxes symbolize windows or skylights through which the artist imagines deconstructed landscapes. The window emerges in these works as a metaphor for liberation and curiosity, as an invitation to leave the house and venture into the street, where another kind of vibrant life and learning unfolds. The transparency and apparent constructive simplicity of this piece should not be misleading. The methacrylate volume is based on the dimensions of Zaloa Ipiña’s house-workshop. The clouds, printed through screen printing, refer to the (celestial) views that can be enjoyed from the skylights of the dwelling. Thus, it is the relationship between interior and exterior (subject and world) that is thematized here, taking the artist’s workshop, which is also their home, as the point of intersection. Beneath the clear coldness of this construction lies a complex interplay of identity layers, an entire world of private memories that remains opaque to the observer.
Zaloa Ipiña (Bilbao, 1986) holds a degree in Fine Arts from UPV/EHU (2009) and completed a master’s degree in Contemporary Graphic Art at the CIEC Foundation in A Coruña. She undertook an artistic residency at the Piramidón Centre d’Art Contemporani in Barcelona in 2015, received the Bizkaia Provincial Council’s Visual Arts Grant in 2013-2014, and was awarded a residency grant at BilbaoArte in 2012. Her recent solo exhibitions include ITZALezinak at Windsor Kulturgintza Gallery (Bilbao, 2014), Argien ibilbidei jarraituz at Torre Ariz in Basauri (2013), and Abierto por vacaciones at Galería Michel Mejuto (Bilbao, 2012). She has upcoming solo exhibitions at the Pérez de la Riva Cultural Center in Las Rozas, Madrid (2016), Barriek at Sala Rekalde in Bilbao (2016), and at Portalea in Eibar, Gipuzkoa (2017). She has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including CALL 2015 at A del Arte Gallery in Zaragoza, 25 al quadrat at Piramidón Centre d’Art Contemporani in Barcelona, Ertibil 2014 at Sala Rekalde in Bilbao, and Punto y raya festival 2014 at the Reykjavik Center for Visual Music in Iceland.
