A fast and versatile graphic technique such as screen printing seems to be the most logical option for Ätakontu, whose work is focused on textile printing and always on the fringes between art and design. In this case, they have taken a classic theme from the world of printmaking – the religious print – and then applied a contemporary pop language. The sacred figures – in black and white – are surrounded with monochrome geometric elements, and the traditional halos and glow replaced with rays made out of masking tape. The religious image subjected to the aesthetics of an Indie festival poster: it may not be such a thoughtless shift as it may seem.
Atakontu is made up of Sara Campillo and Ibai León. After graduating in Fine Arts from the UPV/EHU, they have been awarded different prizes and production grants at centres such as Arteleku or by the Bizkaia and Álava provincial governments. They currently live and work at their studio in Bilbao where they combine their exhibition projects with events to do with the fashion world.
