The photographic triptych has its origin in sculptural works made using fabric, mainly ribbon (supplied by Gutterman S.A.). These photos capture the airiness and subtlety of Cuerpo I and II [Body I and II] sculptures – mainly designed and produced during her BiblaoArte residency – and which are displayed hanging from the ceiling.
One of the artist’s interests, at that time, focused on showing fragility, delicacy and subtlety, with aspects directly linked to beauty, as well as accumulations and repetition – almost the same, but not identical – which is also visible throughout much of her work.
During much of her career, women close to her helped to produce these sculptures, her mother Modesta, her sister Gracia, and a very special friend Avelina. Her family and friends have often helped her to produce some works, either thanks to their knowledge – her father, Felícito, was a welder and he particularly helped her with certain works from the 1990s – or for logistical reasons. The artist believes that leaving a record of that help is a way of paying tribute to the support she has received throughout that time.
Mara Reguilón (Bilbao, 1966) has a PhD from the UPV/EHU and a Master’s Degree from Chelsea School of Art and Design in London. Her artistic work has been funded by Bizkaia Provincial Government, the Basque Government and MEC, to name a few. She has exhibited her art in venues including the Spanish Cultural Centre in Mexico, the RABASF and at Women’s Performance Art Osaka. Her work has also been showcased in fairs such as the FIG in Bilbao and ARCO.
