In Sin título [Untitled] (2000), Begoña Zubero uses a polapane-cibrachrome photograph to transform the image into a luminous, almost physical object that transcends simple depiction. The diffuse shapes, reflections and stains that appear on the surface generate an ambiguous space, halfway between the abstract and the real, which invites us to read the work as a fragment of memory: a place that preserves footprints, distortions and traces of time without showing them explicitly. Her works are made using a macro lens, which take us into brilliant shapes and spaces from which paths emerge towards the plastic appearance that does not include figuration; they convey a sense of strange strength.
This approach is fully in line with Zubero’s career, where she works on historical memory through landscape and architecture, linking the human footprint in the spaces photographed. During her professional career, she has experimented with different languages such as still lifes in the 90s – after her New York stage – subjective photography, abstraction and especially, architectural photography.
