Irantzu Yaldevere’s art has lately been channelled through photography, where her direct and improvised style captures shots, fleeting moments and subtle details of what is happening around her. Her style is intimate and personal, mainly focused on her family and everyday setting, and is determined by the randomness of whatever catches her attention at the time. Irantzu always has her camera with her; it is an inherent part of her and she takes it wherever she goes. The act of capturing the moment is spontaneous and natural, and she always uses an analogue camera.
The images help the artist to trust in her own experience. Seeing others through her lens and developing photos grounds her, allows her to see with her own eyes and not clouded by thoughts, and to recall what it feels to be herself, in all its breadth.
Her creative process starts with the impetus, the action-attention-emotion of what happens, which is immediately captured as an image. However, Irantzu requires the flexibility of time – overlapping past, present and future – for it to be lasting in her understanding of what the tempo of art is. In general, she allows for the most obvious in her work and handles different states in no specific order: something unexpected, something mindful, something constant, something planned, something repetitive, something usual, something unusual that, once left to rest, acquires logic and sense in her work.
Irantzu Yaldebere (Bilbao, 1994) graduated in Art from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of the Basque Country (2016) and specialised in painting on the Master’s Degree at the same faculty (2019). Her art has lately been channelled through photography, where her direct and improvised style captures shots, fleeting moments and subtle details of what is happening in her most intimate and personal setting. She was an artist in resident at BilbaoArte in 2023 and at the Halfhouse Gallery of Barcelona in 2019; her work has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the second prize of Ertibil-Bizkaia. Visual Arts Travelling Exhition of Bizkaia Provincial Government (2016) and the Visual and Plastic Arts of Bizkaia Provincial Government (2019-20). Irantzu has put on several solo and group shows, including Violets. Barriek Programme at Sala Rekalde in Bilbao (2022), Dime Dame [Tell Me, Give Me] at the Aire Gallery, Bilbao (2019), I_A_U, Bizkaia General Assemby House (2019); Getxoarte, Contemporary Practices Centre (2018); Ertibil-Bizkaia. San Sebastian (2022) and gave the lecture entitled Hiru fragmentu. Hiru begirada as part of the Feministaldia programme at Tabakalera, National Contemporary Culture Centre, San Sebastian (2020)
Her publications include: Badakizu zein ederra zaren? (2024), written with the support of a Basque Government visual and plastic art grant; A zer lilura literatura! (2022) published by Testu zaharrak and Dime Dame (2019) published by EFi (2019). Yaldebere also contributed to the Eremuak#6 magazine, within the Basque Government’s open programme (2019).
