The M House (of Mystery) is part of a project that addresses domestic architecture from an unsettling perspective. The houses depicted, seemingly mundane in appearance, evoke a type of familiarity charged with ambiguity. As if the sinister were subtly hinted at beneath an appearance of normalcy, her works suggest that the monstrous does not always manifest grotesquely but often slips imperceptibly beneath the surface of the everyday. Her paintings reflect the artist’s constant curiosity and uncertainty regarding the surrounding world. The impossibility of fully understanding our environment imbues nature with an enigmatic and even threatening sense for the individual. It is this constant state of uncertainty and the insignificance of the human being in relation to the scale of the universe that both intimidates and captivates the artist.

Juana García-Pozuelo (Logroño, 1978) is a visual artist based in Bilbao since 1996. She holds a degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country, where she also completed a Master’s in Art Creation and Research. She has furthered her training at international institutions such as the School of Visual Arts in New York and the Summer School of Fine Art in Salzburg. Since 2001, she has developed a figurative painting style focused on various conceptual themes. Her work has been showcased in twelve solo exhibitions in various national galleries and institutions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions since the beginning of her career. Since 2020, she has collaborated with the Artoteka project, which facilitates the loan of artworks to institutions and individuals. In 2024, she was selected for the Eusko Jaurlaritza grant program to promote Visual and Plastic Arts. Her career includes various scholarships and residencies that have enriched her artistic production. In 2019, she received the Institut Français scholarship, with support from the Bilbaoarte Foundation, for a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. In 2023, she was selected for the Nautilus residency in Lanzarote, and in 2012, she received a scholarship from the Diputación de Bizkaia. She has also been a resident on two occasions at the Bilbaoarte Foundation and, in 2008, at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center in New York. She has received two acquisition awards from the La Rioja Parliament Painting Competition. In March 2025, she developed part of her project at Le Jardin des Métiers d’Art et du Design (JAD) in Sèvres (Île-de-France), thanks to an exchange program between the Hauts-de-Seine department and BilbaoArte.
