Izaro Leregi (Algorta, 1987) graduated in Fine Arts and has a Master’s Degree in Art and Research from the UPV/EHU (2013), where she also lectured (2018-2021). She went on to study at JAI (Institute of Artistic Practices) and completed her studies at the Dutch Art Institute DAI Art Praxis (2022). Leregi works in performance with a sculptural concept, with references to aspects to social sculptures and historical contexts. The vulnerability, precariousness and potentiality of the bodies that inhabit them are themes that she addresses in an artistic practice that lies between sculpture and dance, between film and installation, between the bodily and the text. Focusing on those ‘intermediate’ spaces allows her to work freely and the outcome are overlapping meanings and multiple layers that criss-cross each context/place in the future, past and present.
Her work has been exhibited at different venues with projects such as Evil Eye, Tabakalera (2023), The Good Falling, Het Wilde Weten (2023); Yegua, Manca y Zurda [Mare, One-armed and Left-handed] (2023), Ertibil 40 (2022), Prendido [Kindled], Bosteko (2021); Soplo [Blowing], Barrainkua (2021); Estudiotik at, Tabakalera (2021); Zerbait Gertatzeko Derrigorrezko Desbideratzea, Artium (2020); Eginberri, Guggenheim Bilbao (2017); Feroz eta Kabala, Centro Cultural Montehermoso (2017); Time For Love, Torre de Ariz (2017); Grado Cero, Cultural San Martín, Buenos Aires (2017). Leregi has recently put on different performances: Conjugate One to Each Other, Centrale Fies & Tabakalera (2021, 2023); Touch Me Loud, C.C Amaia (2023); Me Cuello, Me Cabezo, Te Ombligo [I head, I neck, You naval] RKE & Casa Kuna (2021, 2023), Encontrarás la manera [You will find the way], Artium (2020); Lo hacemos dentro [We do it inside], Artium (2020). Izaro Ieregi founded OKELA, an independent space based in Bilbao (2013-2018). She has lectured and run workshops at the University of Frankfurt, Getxoarte, Tabakalera, MACBA, the National University of Argentina, and Xiamen University. Leregi has been awarded grants and prizes including the Bilbaoarte production grant, the Basque Government’s production grant, the ERTIBIL BIZKAIA Award, a KURA Studio Residency (Japan) and the EAS EZE Basque contemporary art internationalisation programme. She has also taken part in artistic residencies at Het Wilde Weten, Rotterdam (2022) Tabakalera, San Sebastián (2018), Chinese European Art Center CEAC, Xiamen (2017) and at the BilbaoArte Foundation, Bilbao (2016, 2023).
