Hand Movie 01 builds on the artist’s previous work ‘Patrón: flexión-rotación-desplazamiento’ [Pattern: Flexion-Rotation-Displacement’. Drawings produced in 2021 using a system of rendering movements of a hand, executed by means of rehearsing and recording those movements; each frame was then subsequently traced in sequence on paper. This work gives continuity and support to that study of body movement using video and drawing, temporality and the occupancy of space, following in the wake of the experimental dance of Bruce Nauman or Trisha Brown. In 2023, she continued experimenting with it, by producing a sculpture based on stacked wooden boards, with drawing rolling out a series of movement that is choreographed by that extremity. The wooden boards would then be used to make woodblock prints for Hand Movie (2023); the title comes from a 1966 video by the choreographer Yvonne Rainer, where the artist records her hand in her post-surgery rehab.
Marta van Tartwijk (Barcelona, 1990) explores how the image is a way into personal experiences, acts as a hinge for time, context and subjective experiences, by experimenting with the body and language. She graduated in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid; she went on to complete her training at ESAB (France), at Barcelona University, A*Desk and the Francisco Alcántara Ceramics School. She has exhibited her work at different institutions including the INJUVE, TEA Tenerife Art Centre, La Capella, Sala de Arte Joven, Fabra i Coats, Sant Andreu Contemporani and Matadero. She has completed residences at Bilbaoarte, Dos Mares and Tabakalera. Marta was also a finalist in the Getxoarte and Miquel Casablancas Awards and a prize winner in the Plastic Art Circuits (Madrid).
