Fragments of bicycles originally from Eibar, heirs of an arms legacy, find a new life in this project. The metal, which had previously been complicit in violence, is now part of the pace of human peddling. The transformation not only affects the object, but also the worker: making bicycle instead of bullets implies a change of pace, of meaning and of relationship with the world. This shift – from the bullet to movement, from the trigger to the journey – is a sculptural act: a metamorphosis of material, thought and identity. The pieces that emerge from this process are the reuse of material in a third watershed direction. The use of minimum variations and repetitions makes these pieces are somewhat similar to the frames of a movie, where each one keeps its uniqueness, but is part of a transformation sequence.
Javier R. Pérez-Curiel (Oviedo, 1978) holds a degree in Fine Arts and a Master’s from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He is currently completing his PhD at EHU/UPV and is a student at the Dutch Art Institute (DAI). With a background as a DJ and musician, he has performed at festivals such as BBK Live, sharing the stage with Omar Souleyman. In 2017, he began his career as a visual artist, exploring sculptural language through the investigation of the limits of its structural elements—space, matter, and action—as generators of poetic imagery. He considers himself an adisciplinary artist, embracing the possibility of using any medium from a non-professionalized perspective to reflect on the image and its conventions. He has expanded his training through various workshops, participating in courses with artists such as Itziar Okariz, Jon Mikel Euba, Asier Mendizabal, and Ibon Aramberri at institutions like Tabakalera, Artium, and Matadero Madrid. In 2023, he was selected for a workshop with Roni Horn and Isabel de Naverán at the Botín Foundation. He has been a resident at Art Omi (New York) and Kunsthaus Bregenz.
