Murugurza’s work is noted for the use of abstract language, and mainly pivots around the repetition of the drawing, geometry and generating figures. The artist is driven by the repetition of shapes and altering their layout to create new composition. She thus creates a set of drawings, which adopts pure geometry or the organic forms of the surrounding reality. The artist uses this action of grouping, multiplying, creating sets or shattering the two-dimensional plane to generate resonances outside the work, resulting in installations that shift the attention to the physical space in which they are located and connect to the space and audience. Compositions that shatter the horizontal plane and achieve new dimensions by playing off the depth of the plane on the paper and its extrapolation to geometric forms in methacrylate, which, playing this time with overlapping, are separated from the initial drawing and expand in space.
Gabrieleruz Mugua (Donostia-San Sebastián, 1992). Graduated in Art from the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU), with an Erasmus at Central Saint Martins, London. Master’s in Increarte, she has participated in Kalostra, an experimental art school, and undertaken artistic residencies at Halfhouse (Barcelona) and BilbaoArte Foundation (2024-25). Her work has been featured in the Eremuak _Harriak program (Markina-Xemein, 2017) and in spaces such as Egia Cultural Center (Donostia, 2017), Azkuna Zentroa (Bilbao, 2018), Okela Sormen Lantegia (Bilbao, 2020), and Halfhouse (Barcelona, 2021).
