‘When I go to take photographs, I go hunting’, which is the way Cristina Fonsaré defines and describes herself as a collector of reluctantly trapped images. Are you my angel is one of those photos ‘caught’ as she wanders through the town usually at night. There is something sinister, something vampirical, in the choice of those sunless hours. At night, the images are diluted in blackness and disappear if they are stripped of any element not illuminated by artificial light. But for the same reason, if that unnatural light is applied, different images appear and re-emerge that denote ordinary objects of everyday life with a new dimension.
The landscape and its people thus photographed are enveloped in an enigmatic atmosphere of estrangement. In this new light, the petrol station appears as an imposing structure materialised by the darkness surrounding it, emerging in a non-place and flanked by the only life form present in the scene: the small figure of a dog that seems to turn its attentive gaze towards the camera pointing at it.
